Description
A hearty, greens-filled soup with fresh turnip greens, smoky ham hocks, and simple seasonings, embodying Southern culinary tradition and comfort.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb turnip greens, fresh and chopped
- 1 smoked ham hock (about 1 lb)
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 4 cups chicken broth
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar (optional)
Instructions
- Step 1: In a large pot, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add chopped onion and minced garlic; sauté until translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
- Step 2: Add the smoked ham hock to the pot along with chicken broth. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer for about 20 minutes to extract flavor.
- Step 3: Remove the ham hock, shred the meat, and return it to the pot. Add chopped turnip greens, salt, and black pepper. Stir well.
- Step 4: Cover and simmer for an additional 10-15 minutes until greens are tender and flavors meld.
- Step 5: Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary. For added tang, stir in 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar before serving.
Notes
You can omit the ham hock for a vegetarian version by adding smoked paprika or liquid smoke for smoky flavor. The soup can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated gently.
